When the fist Kaiju attacked San Francisco destroying Starfleet base and medical, McCoy upon losing his wife in the attack volunteered for the Jaeger pilot program with his father. With a few wins under the McCoy’s belt, daddy McCoy is killed in another attack and Leonards life goes to hell. Losing himself to alcohol and despair he becomes self destructive and a liability. Pike brings in Jim Kirk, who was thought to have vanished after the death of his own father, in hopes to rectify things and not lose two talented pilots. Can two men with daddy issues and more baggage than any plane can take drift together. Can they heal one another?
